Results from its 2nd Net Index study reveal that social networking is
the most popular online activity (90%) in Malaysia, the highest in the
region, followed by online search (89%), email (87%) and use of online
portals (80%) which also rank among the highest.
Accessing search engines, social networking sites and email are the
major activities that fuel Internet usage in Malaysia. Online chatting
(76%), video files sharing (62%), instant messaging (58%) and
downloading music (42%) are also of key interest to Malaysians.
Usage of modern online platforms such as mobile internet has seen
significant increase from 2010, largely driven by cost-effective
smartphone packages offered by telco providers. With in-depth
highlights on current Internet trends, evolving digital landscape and
online behaviour of Malaysians, the annual Yahoo! Net Index study was
conducted in conjunction with Synovate, one of the world’s leading
market research groups.
