Singapore Book Publishers Association (SBPA) has announced the winners of the inaugural Publishing Awards 2012. Winners in five categories – Best Novel, Best Debut Work, Best Non-Fiction Title, Best Cover Design and Best Retail Campaign – were crowned at the SBPA Gala Dinner held at the Rendezvous Grand Hotel during the Singapore Writers’ Festival.
Winners were selected by a panel of judges comprising leading industry insiders and experts, including media and marketing professionals, academics and journalists.
Chris Newson, General Manager and Publisher of Marshall Cavendish International (Asia) said, “I am genuinely thrilled to win the award – kudos to the editorial and production staff who worked on the book and of course Sunil Nair for writing such a wonderful novel.” Phil Tatham, Publisher of Monsoon Books said, “We are elated to win two of the four book category awards and very honoured to receive such recognition from our industry peers. We are especially happy that Barbara Ismail’s Shadow Play won the Best Debut Work as this is the first book in what promises to be a very entertaining crime series.”
“The publishing award gives due recognition to the people behind-the-scenes who essentially bring all books to life,” said Kenny Chan, Director, Merchandising of Books Kinokuniya who judged the Best Novel category. Triena Ong, President of SBPA Executive Committee added, “We are encouraged to receive many awards worthy entries. We hope the awards will inspire publishers to produce materials of high standards and propel Singapore’s publishing industry to greater heights.”
