MediaCorp has announced the winners of the MediaCorp Young Creatives Competition 2012. Kenneth Chia and Jovan Peh from DDB Singapore emerged as the winning team in the Film category, while James Holman and Nuno Pestana Teixeira from TBWA\Singapore edged out the competition for the top spot in the Print category.
The two winning teams, courtesy of official partner 4As Singapore and sponsors Eurokars Habitat Pte Ltd and Systema (Lion Corporation (S) Pte Ltd), will fly to France to represent Singapore in the Cannes Young Lions Competition at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity 2012. The winning team from the print category will also represent Singapore in the Young Spikes Integrated Competition at Spikes Asia 2012.
Participating teams had 48 hours after receiving the brief to complete their entries – a short film for the film category, or a print ad for the print category, using official content sponsor Getty Images’ extensive range of creative imagery, footage and music content. The brief was given by Mercy Relief, an independent non-governmental humanitarian charity established in response to the human tragedies in Asia. Its aid programmes include providing timely and effective assistance to disaster-stricken communities; and longer-term development projects to uplift the lives of the impoverished and disadvantaged, focusing on water & sanitation, shelter, sustainable livelihoods, healthcare and education.
Judging of entries was held behind closed doors on 3 May 2012. The judging panel was chaired by Mr Tay Guan Hin, Regional Executive Creative Director of JWT Asia and included Ali Shabaz, Chief Creative Officer of Grey Group Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand; Calvin Soh, former Chief Creative Officer of Publicis Singapore; Chris Chiu, Founder and Chief Creative Officer of Ren Partnership; Steve Back, Chief Creative Officer of Ogilvy & Mather Singapore; Thomas Yang, creative director of DDB Singapore and Goh Wee Kim, creative director of BBDO Singapore.
Mr Tay Guan Hin says, “Winning a Young Creative Award in Cannes is not any easier than winning a Lion statuette. We had to make sure the final winners who represent Singapore will have a strong chance to win. The winning work had to meet a few criteria. Was it insightful? Was it fresh and not obvious? Was it simple yet engaging? Although the brief wasn’t easy, we strongly felt that the topic was relevant in today’s climate. It was a unanimous decision for the judges as the winners stood out.”
